Joyce Kinabo is a Professor of Human Nutrition in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania. Joyce’s undergraduate degree is a BSc Agriculture with a major in Food Science and Technology from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and MSc in Food Science from Leeds University, UK. She obtained her PhD in Nutritional Physiology from Glasgow University in 1990. Lecturing for over 26 years, Professor Kinabo covers human nutrition, nutritional physiology, body composition and energy balance, nutritional epidemiology, maternal and child nutrition and food and nutrition security. Her research has focused mainly on energy balance studies (thermic effect of food), maternal and child nutrition, adolescent nutrition, food body interactions and nutritional status.She is actively involved in community nutrition research focusing on developing nutrition interventions within communities through improving or enhancing the capacity of communities to solve their nutritional problems by identifying and formulating appropriate interventions. Currently, she is leading a team of scientists from universities in Malawi, Tanzania and Leeds in a project to develop and test Eco-Nutrition guidelines to enable communities to best respond to the challenges of food insecurity, inadequate care and inadequate environmental quality in the context of climate change. Further, Joyce envisages exploring the effect of climate change especially increasing environmental temperatures and water stress on nutrient composition and quality of food crops.Within AgriDiet, she is leading the Tanzania country review of how national policies impact upon nutrition and is also responsible for developing the national methodology plan for the field work in Tanzania.
